Inspect a photo

The file stays in your browser. This viewer reads supported embedded tags, including GPS when present. It does not modify the image or remove metadata. Proprietary camera MakerNotes are not decoded.

Uses the MIT-licensed exifr library. Files are read locally; JSON reports may themselves contain personal information from the photo.

How to use the Photo Metadata & EXIF Viewer

  1. 01

Choose a JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC/HEIF, or AVIF file no larger than 20 MB.

  2. 02

Review the file details and the GPS summary, if decimal coordinates can be read.

  3. 03

Search for tags such as Make, Lens, Date, or GPS, or select a metadata group.

  4. 04

Copy or download a JSON report. Clear the file when finished.

Examples

Check a camera exposure

Search for ExposureTime, FNumber, or ISO to find supported capture settings. Edited images and messaging-app copies may have these fields removed.

Review location data before sharing

Look at the GPS summary, then search GPS and location-related XMP tags. Readable coordinates can identify where a photo was taken, but their absence does not prove a file has no location information.

Compare original and exported files

Inspect the original photo, download its report, then inspect your edited copy. Different export settings can preserve, replace, or omit metadata blocks.

What this viewer reads

The exifr library reads supported EXIF/TIFF, GPS, XMP, IPTC, ICC, JFIF, and PNG header fields when available in the selected format. Recognized values can be translated to readable labels. Proprietary camera MakerNotes are not decoded. Format support does not mean every possible metadata block or vendor tag is understood.

Dates need context

An EXIF capture date often records a wall-clock time without a time zone. Date revival is disabled here so the parser’s original date strings can be shown without inferring an offset. OffsetTime fields, GPS time, camera settings, and editing history may provide additional context. Metadata is editable and cannot establish authenticity by itself.

A report, not a metadata remover

The JSON download contains a readable inventory of displayed fields and file details; it does not rewrite the photo. Reports cap the number of fields at 1,000, summarize binary values and long arrays, truncate long strings, and limit nesting. A missing or truncated tag should not be interpreted as evidence that information is absent from the original file.

What to know

  • Readable tags depend on the file format and the parser’s support. This is not a forensic or complete metadata inventory.
  • No metadata stripping, original-file editing, or proprietary MakerNote decoding is provided.

Common questions

Do my photos leave my device?

No. The metadata parser reads the chosen file in your browser. If you explicitly open a GPS map link, the displayed coordinates are sent to OpenStreetMap.

Can this tool remove EXIF or GPS data?

No. It only inspects supported metadata and exports a JSON report. Use a metadata editor with an explicit removal function, then inspect the resulting file again.

Why does my photo show no camera details?

The file may have been exported without those fields, passed through a service that removed them, or stored metadata in an unsupported block. No supported fields found is not the same as no metadata exists.

Does it support RAW or video?

This viewer accepts the listed still-image formats only. Camera RAW, PDF, audio, video, and sidecar files are outside its supported scope.
