Build your discount sequence

Percentage discounts compound in the order shown. Every saving is rounded to the nearest cent before the next step. Coupons stop at zero; tax is applied last.

How to use the Discount Calculator

  1. 01

Enter the original price and two percentage discounts. Use zero for any unused discount.

  2. 02

Enter a fixed coupon and choose whether it applies before or after the percentage reductions. Enter your tax assumption, or zero.

  3. 03

Review the step table before copying or downloading the calculation. Each percentage acts on the remaining price.

Examples

Stacked percentages

A 100.00 item discounted by 20%, then 10%, costs 72.00 before tax. The combined reduction is 28%, because the second discount applies to 80.00.

Coupon order matters

Starting at 100.00 with 20% and 10% discounts plus a 5.00 coupon gives 67.00 if the coupon comes last. Applying the coupon first gives 68.40. Neither scenario includes tax.

Percentage discounts compound

For an unrounded starting price P and discounts a and b, the remaining fraction is (1 − a/100) × (1 − b/100). The effective reduction is one minus that fraction. This tool also rounds each step to cents, so tiny prices can depart from an unrounded formula.

A visible checkout assumption

The coupon cannot reduce the price below zero. The entered tax applies to the final discounted price and is rounded once to cents. Stores may restrict coupon stacking or use a different taxable base; choose inputs that match the offer you are comparing.

What to know

  • The sequence is a calculation assumption, not a claim that a retailer accepts the combination.
  • Refunds, rebates, shipping and minimum-purchase coupon conditions are not modeled.

Common questions

Are 20% off and another 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The second percentage reduces the remaining balance. Before cent rounding, 20% followed by 10% is 28% off.

What if the coupon exceeds the price?

The coupon is capped at the remaining price. The calculator does not create credit, cash back or a negative purchase total.

Is the savings number after tax?

Savings and effective discount compare the original price with the discounted price before tax. Tax is shown separately.

Can a 100% discount be entered?

Yes. It reduces the remaining price to zero. Later reductions and the modeled tax are then zero.
