How to use the Sales Tax Calculator

  1. 01

Select whether the taxable amount excludes or already includes tax. Select the display currency; it does not convert amounts.

  2. 02

Enter the taxable portion, your combined tax percentage, and any separate nontaxable amount. Use decimal points and at most two decimal places for money.

  3. 03

Read the taxable base, rounded tax, and grand total. Copy the receipt breakdown or download it as CSV.

Examples

Adding tax to a price

For a hypothetical rate of 8.25%, a taxable base of 100.00 produces 8.25 tax. Adding a separate 10.00 nontaxable item gives a grand total of 118.25.

Backing tax out of a total

If the taxable portion already totals 108.25 including 8.25% tax, its base is 100.00 and its tax is 8.25. Enter a separate exempt purchase in the nontaxable field rather than including it in 108.25.

Two directions, one rate

For a tax-exclusive amount B and percentage r, tax is B × r ÷ 100. For a tax-inclusive amount G, included tax is G × r ÷ (100 + r). The calculator rounds the tax once to cents and uses subtraction to keep the displayed base and total reconciled.

What the taxable portion means here

Only the amount in the taxable field receives the entered rate. The nontaxable field is added afterward. This makes the scope visible, but it does not determine whether a product, shipping fee, coupon, or service is taxable.

What to know

  • User-entered rates and taxable amounts are assumptions, not a tax determination.
  • One taxable portion and one rate are modeled. Exemptions, tax caps and jurisdiction-specific rounding are not inferred.

Common questions

Does this find the tax rate for my location?

No. Enter the rate that applies to your own scenario. No location or current rate database is included.

Can I enter several tax rates?

The tool uses one combined rate. For separately compounded or independently rounded taxes, calculate the components separately using the rules for your transaction.

Why might a receipt differ by a cent?

This calculator rounds tax on the entered taxable portion as a whole. A seller may round each line item or use a different required rounding procedure.

Does switching currency recalculate the price?

No. USD, GBP and EUR change formatting only. All calculations use two decimal places for money.
