One straight section
A 12 ft section at 16 in centers uses ceiling(144 ÷ 16) + 1 = 10 regular stud positions including both ends. Four manual extras give 14 pieces; 10% spare allowance rounds to 16 stud pieces.
Create a quantity takeoff from an existing wall layout. Count regular stud positions, add manual extras and compare stud pieces with the stock lumber needed to cut them.
Count regular stud positions, manual extras and stock boards from an approved layout.
Use spacing from your plan. This calculator does not choose a safe spacing.
Use one currency throughout; tax, labor and delivery excluded.
Prices use your chosen currency consistently. Blank price skips cost. Example coverage, density, yield and prices are editable scenarios, not current product offers.
Illustration is schematic, not an installation drawing.

Method: Per section = ceiling(length ÷ entered on-center spacing) + 1 end stud. Add manual extras, then spare allowance. Stud stock assumes zero saw kerf. Each plate run rounds independently to stock lengths.
Sections are identical and counted independently; shared ends are not merged. No deductions for openings. Add corner, king, jack, cripple and backing pieces manually as appropriate to an approved plan. Plate estimate excludes laps, saw kerf and reuse. Spacing, stock and counts are quantity inputs, not code or structural recommendations.
Quantity and material-only cost estimate. Verify field measurements, product instructions and your purchase units. Labor, delivery, taxes, equipment and structural adequacy are excluded.
Calculations run in your browser. This tool does not request a location, retrieve live prices or send your measurements to a material supplier.
Enter a straight section’s length, the number of identical sections and the on-center spacing specified by your plan.
Add any extra stud pieces across the entire project. Set each stud’s cut length, stock length and the number of plate runs per section.
Choose the spare allowance and optional price per stock board. Review stud pieces, stud stock and plate stock separately.
A 12 ft section at 16 in centers uses ceiling(144 ÷ 16) + 1 = 10 regular stud positions including both ends. Four manual extras give 14 pieces; 10% spare allowance rounds to 16 stud pieces.
For that section, three plate runs and 8 ft stock require two boards per run: six plate boards. With 8 ft stud cuts, the sixteen stud pieces use sixteen stock boards, making twenty-two stock boards before any plate lap or kerf allowance.
Spacing and section dimensions are user inputs. AWC and APA describe how framing layouts vary with loads, corners, openings and the selected system. This calculator does not determine which layout is safe, permitted or suitable for a wall.
Regular stud positions are retained across the full section; openings are not removed. Add corner, king, jack, cripple and backing pieces manually from your approved layout. The stock cutting estimate assumes zero saw kerf and equal-length pieces. Plate runs round independently without lap, trimming or shared offcuts. Shorter cripple pieces should be estimated separately.
No. Every entered section is counted independently, including both end studs. Adjust manual planning if a detailed layout shares members.
You enter the actual cut length. The tool does not subtract plate thickness or choose stock based on finished wall height.
The spare percentage applies to stud pieces only. Plate stock is a separate independent-run estimate; add any required plate extras, laps and saw kerf outside this result.
