Choose a region or leave all regions selected. The default pool is 193 UN members plus the Holy See and Palestine, the two UN observer states.

  2. 02

Optionally include all 250 source entries or restrict the pool to landlocked places. Enter a batch size from 1 to 100.

  3. 03

Generate, copy, or download your results. Reset the session when you want previously selected places to become available again.

Examples

A geography warm-up

Select Africa and generate five countries. Ask students to locate them and name their capitals before revealing the result details.

A landlocked challenge

Turn on Landlocked only and choose Asia. Each eligible country has equal odds, regardless of its size or population.

A writing prompt

Include all source entries and choose one place as the setting for a research exercise. Verify local details before using them in a finished story.

What counts as a country?

The default rule gives a recognizable 195-place pool: 193 United Nations members and the Holy See and Palestine. The broader option includes every one of the 250 entries in the source database, including dependencies, disputed areas, and Antarctica. It is an inclusion rule for this tool, not a claim about sovereignty.

How random selection works

The picker uses browser cryptographic random values with rejection sampling and a partial Fisher–Yates shuffle. Each eligible record has equal odds. Results never repeat within a batch. The session setting additionally excludes every previously generated record, even when you change filters.

Names, capitals, and regions

Names, capitals, areas, and geographic regions come from the mledoze/countries snapshot downloaded October 23, 2026. Americas combines North and South America. Some places have multiple capitals, all of which appear together. Dataset facts can change, so check an official national source for travel or current administrative decisions.

What to know

  • The 250-entry dataset includes territories and disputed areas. Region labels follow the source.
  • Flag emoji appearance and support vary by browser and operating system.

Common questions

Why do I get no results for Antarctica?

The default UN-based pool contains no Antarctic entry. Switch to all 250 source entries to include Antarctica.

Can I prevent repeats?

Yes. Avoid repeats across this session is on by default. If the remaining pool is smaller than the requested count, reduce the count or reset the session; the picker never silently repeats a country.

Are large countries more likely to appear?

No. Selection is uniform over matching records. Area and population do not affect the odds.

Is my history saved?

History stays in this page’s memory. Reloading or closing the page clears it. The tool does not send results to an external service.
