Random Generators

Random Coordinate Generator

Generate random geographic coordinates over the whole globe or within latitude and longitude bounds. Sampling uses equal area on a spherical Earth, so global points are not artificially concentrated near the poles. Ocean locations are included.

Choose a geographic rectangle

Equal-area sampling on a spherical Earth, including oceans. Longitude is uniform; sine of latitude is uniform. No geocoding, land filter, or address lookup. For an antimeridian-crossing region, split it into two rectangles.

Decimal-degree coordinates

Generate points to see coordinates in latitude, longitude order.

Inputs and generated results are processed in your browser. These tools do not upload them or persist them in local storage. Copying or downloading creates a record you control.

How to use the Random Coordinate Generator

  1. 01

Use the global defaults or enter south, north, west, and east bounds in decimal degrees.

  2. 02

Choose up to 1,000 points. West must be less than east; split a region that crosses the antimeridian.

  3. 03

Generate and copy the latitude, longitude pairs. Display and export round values to six decimal places.

Examples

Sample the full sphere

Use south −90, north 90, west −180, and east 180. Many results will lie in water because there is no land-only filter.

Try a US-shaped rectangle

The example fills 24–50° latitude and −125 to −66° longitude. This rectangle also includes neighboring countries and ocean; it does not follow the US border.

Why latitude is transformed

Latitude bands have different surface areas. Drawing latitude uniformly from −90° to 90° would overrepresent polar areas. This tool draws uniformly between the sine of the latitude bounds, then applies the inverse sine. Longitude is drawn uniformly within its bounds.

Spherical approximation and finite precision

Equal area refers to a sphere, not an exact ellipsoidal model of Earth. Samples use finite 32-bit random fractions. Decimal-degree output is rounded to six places, so two independent points can display identically. The output is suitable for simulation and exploration, not surveying.

Bounds do not identify countries

A rectangle is only a geographic envelope. The generator does not query a geocoder, reverse-geocode addresses, test coastline polygons, or verify whether a point is reachable or safe to visit. No place name is invented for a coordinate.

Common questions

Are coordinates listed latitude first?

Yes. Every row and exported pair uses latitude, longitude in decimal degrees.

Can I generate only land coordinates?

No. The tool has no land polygon dataset or land-only rejection filter.

Can my rectangle cross longitude 180°?

Not in a single request. Split it into a west-to-180° rectangle and a −180°-to-east rectangle. Equal batch counts between unequal-area pieces would not produce a uniform combined sample.

Are the boundaries included?

The underlying finite random grid can include a lower bound; upper bounds are excluded before rounding. Display rounding can show an upper boundary. Do not use this tool to enforce an exact exclusion buffer.
