Plan a new mulch layer and compare bagged versus bulk material cost.

Project measurements

For a circle or ring, enter the outside diameter.

Use one currency throughout; tax, labor and delivery excluded.

Per yd³ in US mode, per m³ in metric mode. Re-enter this price after changing units.

Prices use your chosen currency consistently. Blank price skips cost. Example coverage, density, yield and prices are editable scenarios, not current product offers.

Method: Net area × added mulch depth × (1 + allowance/100), divided by bag volume and rounded up. Compare with bulk volume rounded to the supplier increment.

Depth is the new layer to add, not the total depth including existing mulch. Ring mode excludes a circular center. Excluded area can remove other unmulched patches. This does not recommend plant-specific depth or mulch placement.

Quantity and material-only cost estimate. Verify field measurements, product instructions and your purchase units. Labor, delivery, taxes, equipment and structural adequacy are excluded.

Calculations run in your browser. This tool does not request a location, retrieve live prices or send your measurements to a material supplier.

How to use the Mulch Calculator

  1. 01

Select rectangle, circle or ring. Enter the outside diameter for circles and both diameters for a ring.

  2. 02

Enter only the depth of new mulch to add, plus the bag volume, order increment and allowance.

  3. 03

Optionally enter a bag price and a price per cubic yard or cubic meter. Review the two alternative orders and save the comparison.

Examples

A rectangular border

A 12 × 10 ft bed with a 3 in new layer uses 30 ft³ before allowance. At 10% extra, 33 ft³ needs seventeen 2 ft³ bags, while a 0.25 yd³ bulk increment gives 1.25 yd³.

A tree ring

A ring with an outside diameter of 10 ft and an inside diameter of 3 ft has about 71.47 ft² of area. At 3 in depth and 10% allowance, it needs about 19.65 ft³: ten 2 ft³ bags.

Volume starts with new depth

Subtract existing mulch when deciding how much new material to add. The calculation itself treats the entered depth as entirely new mulch. A circular center can represent an unmulched tree area, while the excluded-area field removes other patches.

Bag and bulk comparison

The method multiplies area by depth and converts cubic feet to cubic yards using 27 ft³ per yd³. Bag and bulk rounding can buy different volumes, so the cheapest unit price does not always produce the lowest order total. Follow the selected mulch product’s placement and depth instructions.

What to know

  • Material quantities and user-price scenarios only; no structural adequacy, code compliance or installation approval.
  • Example product values are illustrative. Verify your measurements and current product label before ordering.

Common questions

Does the tool recommend mulch depth?

No. The depth is yours to select using the product instructions and planting conditions. The default demonstrates the calculation.

Why are bag and bulk costs different volumes?

Bags round to whole bags, while bulk rounds to your entered delivery increment. Each cost uses its own rounded purchase quantity.

Does a metric switch convert the bulk price?

The physical dimensions and volumes convert. Bulk price is cleared because the pricing unit changes from yd³ to m³; enter the applicable price for that unit.
