Build a checkerboard

Every square is exactly the specified size. The light and dark colors are opaque; the exported checkerboard is an image, not a transparency mask.

How to use the Checkerboard Generator

  1. 01

Set columns, rows, and the side length of each square in pixels.

  2. 02

Choose the two opaque colors, or load the classic 8 × 8 preset.

  3. 03

Check the complete board and download SVG or PNG. Output width equals columns times cell size; height equals rows times cell size.

Examples

Classic board illustration

Choose eight rows, eight columns, and 64 pixel cells to export a 512 × 512 pixel board. The preset uses near-white and deep slate.

Warm background panel

Use twelve columns, eight rows, and 48 pixel cells with cream and orange. The result is a 576 × 384 pixel graphic that can be placed in a slide or layout.

Exact cells and partial repeat periods

The SVG uses a two-by-two pattern tile and crops it to the requested whole-cell dimensions. Odd row or column counts are allowed: the final row or column still contains complete squares. The first square at the top left uses the dark-square color control.

Checks are visible artwork

Both selected colors are opaque. Unlike a transparency indicator in an image editor, this checkerboard is the exported artwork itself. If you need an actual transparent image, use a tool that exports alpha rather than treating pale checks as empty space.

What to know

  • Each output side is limited to 4,096 pixels; cells range from 2 to 128 pixels.
  • Coordinates, labels, game pieces, and print-scale calibration are not included.

Common questions

Can the board have an odd number of rows?

Yes. Any whole number from 2 to 64 is accepted for each axis, within the output dimension limit.

Can I print a dimensionally accurate calibration board?

This tool specifies pixels, not physical print dimensions or camera-calibration tolerances. Printer scaling and paper distortion affect physical measurements. Verify your workflow independently before using a print for calibration.

Will an odd-size board repeat seamlessly as a background?

A board with an odd number of cells on either axis does not preserve alternating colors at that tile boundary. Choose even counts on both axes if you intend to repeat the whole exported image.
