Clock times use a 24-hour clock. Breaks are unpaid minutes subtracted once per shift. Select “Ends next day” explicitly; each shift is limited to 24 hours.

Shift 1

Net work: 7h 30m · 7.5000 decimal hours

Total net work
7h 30m

7.5000 decimal hours · 0h 30m unpaid breaks · 1 shift

These are wall-clock totals. No dates, daylight-saving changes, overtime rules, or payroll rounding are applied. Overlapping shifts are added separately.

Shift calculations and CSV creation run in the page. Reloading clears the entered shifts.

How to use the Work Hours Calculator

  1. 01

Enter the first shift’s start and end using a 24-hour clock, and add a label such as Monday or Opening shift.

  2. 02

Enter total unpaid break minutes. Check Ends next day only when the end belongs to the following calendar day.

  3. 03

Add more shifts as needed. Correct any validation messages before copying the summary or downloading the CSV.

Examples

A standard day with lunch

09:00 to 17:00 is 8 hours. Subtract a 30-minute unpaid lunch to get 7h 30m, or 7.5000 decimal hours.

An overnight shift

22:00 to 06:00 with Ends next day selected is 8 hours. A 45-minute break leaves 7h 15m, or 7.2500 decimal hours.

Two separate shifts

09:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 18:30 total 7h 30m before breaks. Enter both as separate rows so the two-hour gap is not counted as work.

Overnight rules are explicit

Without Ends next day, the end must be at or after the start. With it selected, 24 hours are added before calculating the duration. A shift cannot exceed 24 hours: 09:00 to 17:00 with next day selected would be 32 hours and is rejected. Equal start and end times mean zero hours on the same day, or 24 hours with next day selected.

Clock hours versus decimal hours

Minutes are divided by 60 to calculate decimal hours. A total of 7h 30m equals 7.5 hours, not 7.30 hours. Displayed decimal totals use four decimal places. The underlying calculation adds whole minutes first, so rounding each shift’s displayed decimal does not change the total.

Exporting and interpreting a timesheet

The CSV includes shift labels, clock times, the next-day flag, break minutes, net minutes, and decimal hours. Open it in a spreadsheet or import it into another tool. Each row is independent: overlapping shifts are added twice. Labels beginning with common spreadsheet formula characters are prefixed with an apostrophe to keep them as text.

What to know

  • No date-aware DST adjustment, overtime, pay calculation, overlap detection, or payroll rounding.

Common questions

Does this apply overtime or payroll rules?

No. It totals entered time only. It does not apply overtime, paid-break policies, labor rules, wages, or employer-specific rounding.

Are breaks paid or unpaid?

Break minutes entered here are subtracted as unpaid time. Leave paid breaks out of this field.

What happens during daylight-saving changes?

This calculator has no shift dates or time zones. It measures wall-clock differences, so a real overnight shift during a clock change may have a different elapsed duration.

Can a break be longer than the shift?

No. Breaks must be nonnegative whole minutes and cannot exceed the gross shift duration. A break equal to the duration produces zero net work.

How many shifts can I enter?

You can enter up to 31 shifts in this calculator. For work lasting more than 24 hours, split the period into separate shifts.
