TSV / CSV Converter

Change delimiters without replacing characters inside values. The converter parses records first, then quotes fields correctly for the destination delimiter.

Change delimiters safely

This tab-separated dialect uses CSV-style double quotes and quoted multiline fields. Every record, including a possible header, is preserved. Blank records are retained when their field count matches.

Formula protection changes leading =, +, -, @ cells and tab/line-break prefixes. Disable it for an exact data round trip. Output uses CRLF record endings.

All parsing and exports run locally in your browser. Example records are original fictional data, not an external dataset.

How to use the TSV / CSV Converter

  1. 01

Select TSV to CSV or CSV to TSV.

  2. 02

Paste delimited records or open a UTF-8 text file. Choose formula protection and optional BOM.

  3. 03

Convert, inspect the record preview, and download the destination file.

Examples

Comma inside a TSV value

A tab-separated note containing contains, comma is quoted in CSV output so it still occupies one column.

Tab inside a CSV field

A quoted CSV value with a tab stays one value and becomes a quoted TSV field rather than splitting into two columns.

This TSV dialect uses quote-aware fields

Tab-separated files do not all agree on quoting. This tool uses the same double-quote rules for TSV as it does for CSV: quotes wrap a field, doubled quotes represent a literal quote, and quoted fields may contain tabs or line breaks. Raw-TSV exports that treat every quote literally may need a different parser.

Every record is preserved as data

There is no header inference or type conversion. A first record that happens to contain labels is converted like every other record. A leading UTF-8 BOM is removed during reading and can be added to output. Records must have the same number of fields. Completely blank records are retained when they meet that shape.

Make an exact conversion when needed

Spreadsheet protection is enabled by default. It prefixes formula-like cells with a single quote, including signed numeric text. Turn it off for an exact value-preserving conversion and only open trusted data in a spreadsheet. CRLF is used between output records; quoted field content remains intact.

What to know

  • Input is limited to 500,000 characters. Review the supported syntax and export policy described above.

Common questions

Why not simply replace tabs with commas?

A tab or comma may be part of a quoted value. Replacing characters without parsing can create or destroy columns.

Does the first row become a header?

No. All records are treated the same, so header values survive without special handling.

Are empty cells retained?

Yes. Adjacent delimiters and quoted empty fields become empty strings and remain empty fields in the destination format.
