Team Randomizer

Turn a participant list into teams with nearly equal head counts. Spread captains across teams, save a repeatable seed, and export the result for a classroom, workshop, or game.

How to use the Team Randomizer

  1. 01

Enter one unique participant name per line. Blank lines are ignored.

  2. 02

Choose 2–50 teams. You need at least as many participants as teams.

  3. 03

Optionally enter people who should each land on a different team, and add a seed to reproduce the draw.

  4. 04

Select Make teams, then copy the groups or download the text file.

Examples

A class of 29

Choose 6 teams for 29 names. Five teams will have five people and one will have four.

Spread three captains

For three teams, put Alex, Drew, and Kai on separate lines in the separate-participants field. Each captain goes to a different team; everyone else is randomly assigned.

Balanced sizes and separate participants

Every participant appears exactly once. People in the separate-participants field are assigned to distinct teams first. The remaining participants fill whichever teams currently have the fewest people, so final team sizes differ by no more than one. This balances head counts; it does not infer skills or experience.

Reproduce a draw with a seed

With the same participant order, team count, separate-participants list, and seed, the result repeats. Leave the seed empty for a new random draw. Seeded draws use a deterministic generator and are intended for reproducibility, not secret or audited selection.

What to know

  • Maximum 1,000 participants and 50 teams.
  • The separate-participants list must contain no more names than the number of teams.

Common questions

Can two participants have the same name?

Names must be unique so separate-participant rules are unambiguous. Use a last initial or a number, such as Taylor A and Taylor B.

Can I keep several groups together or balance skill ratings?

This version supports one set of people who must all be on separate teams. It does not support arbitrary pair rules, keeping friends together, or automatic skill balancing.

What if the numbers do not divide evenly?

Some teams receive one additional person. No two team sizes differ by more than one.
