Average Calculator

Paste a list to compare its arithmetic mean with its median and repeated values. The summary also includes count, total, bounds, and range, making it easier to notice a surprising value before exporting a CSV.

Describe a number list

Separate up to 1,000 numbers with spaces, newlines, commas, or semicolons. Do not use thousands separators.

All observations have equal weight. Decimals, negative values, and e notation are accepted.

Mean = sum ÷ count. Median is the central sorted value, or the average of the middle pair. Every repeated value tying for highest frequency is listed as a mode.

How to use the Average Calculator

  1. 01

Paste numbers separated by commas, semicolons, spaces, or line breaks. Do not add a header or thousands separators.

  2. 02

Check the count and bounds to confirm the list was parsed as intended.

  3. 03

Compare mean and median, then copy the summary or download its CSV file.

Examples

An uneven list

For 12, 15, 15, 18, 40, the sum is 100 and the mean is 20. The median and mode are both 15. The larger observation pulls the mean above the middle value.

An even number of values

For 2, 4, 10, 20, the mean is 9. The median is the average of the two middle numbers, (4 + 10) ÷ 2 = 7.

Tied modes

For 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, the modes are 1 and 2. Both occur twice, which is the greatest frequency in that list.

Mean and median answer different questions

The arithmetic mean spreads the total evenly across all observations. The median identifies the center after sorting. When a few values are far from the others, inspect both instead of assuming the mean describes a typical observation.

Each entry counts as one observation

Repeated entries are kept. A value appearing five times has five times the influence of a value appearing once. If your list already contains frequency counts or unequal weights, use the weighted average calculator instead of pasting only the distinct values.

Exact decimal parsing

Typed decimal values are stored as rational numbers for sums and comparisons. This lets the tool sort close decimal values without first reducing them to binary floating-point approximations. Readable results with more than 12 decimal places are truncated and marked with an ellipsis.

What to know

  • At most 1,000 observations and 100,000 characters per list.
  • Missing-value labels, units, and headers are rejected rather than silently ignored.

Common questions

What if every value appears once?

The tool reports no repeated values rather than listing every observation as a mode. This is a stated reporting convention.

Are commas thousands separators?

No. A comma separates values. Enter 1200 as one number; entering 1,200 creates two observations, 1 and 200.

Does this calculate standard deviation?

No. This summary focuses on center, frequency, and range. It does not estimate spread using variance or standard deviation, and it does not infer missing observations.
